contemporary yoga masters, saints, sages,
and self-realized persons

Sources of Knowledge

Only accomplished Yoga Masters (Yoga = Union with God), Sages and Self-realized persons are genuine sources of knowledge. While they might not wear a halo, they do know what God is. God, despite widespread childish opinion, is not a person. God is neither a he nor a she. God is Self-energetic Mass-awareness. All matter is nothing but a condensation of this unlimited field of energy. Thus, our bodies are made of God's energy and our awareness is part of God's Awareness. But that needs to be realized. All those, who accomplished this realization, have the necessary qualifications to guide seekers. All other guides and teachers of the Truth - without any direct knowledge of the Truth - are what the Bible calls: "the blind leading the blind." Since we are better served to address an alive person with our questions, this page introduces only "Contemporary Saints, Sages, and Self-realized persons". The difference between Saints, Sages, and persons who are Self-realized is not really there once we understand who or what the Self is and how the Self fits in with this all-pervading field of Awareness we have termed God.

Photo of Daya MataDaya Mata (Faye Wright) from Salt Lake City is now president of Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF). Faye Wright's monastic name, Daya Mata, means "Mother of Compassion." Daya also means kindness. Dr. Binay R. Sen, the former Ambassador of India to the United States and Director of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, stated once: "Those who, like myself, were privileged to have met Paramahansaji find reflected in Daya Mataji that same spirit of divine love and compassion that so impressed me on my first visit to the Self-Realization Center almost forty years ago (Calcutta, October 20, 1990)."

Her book, "Only Love," shows Daya Mata in a deep state of Samadhi (Holy Communion) on page 152. Yogananda's "Autobiography of a Yogi" also shows Daya Mata in deep blissful communion with the Divine.

Photo of Shree MaaShree Maa teaches various Yoga disciplines with an emphasis on Bhakti Yoga in the tradition of the great Ramakrishna Paramahansa.

The depth of her realization is expressed in her radiant Stillness and quotes like the following: "We are all One. May everyone see that we are all One"
(from Daughters of the Goddess, by Linda Johnsen, Yes International Publishers).

After decades of meditating in the caves of the Himalayas, her love for God led her around the world to share the wealth that she found. She conducts herself with grace, and her universal philosophy creates harmony wherever she goes. She is a divinely inspired saint respected by people of every religious heritage in every corner of the world. Goodness transcends all sectarian boundaries, and Shree Maa is known as kindness incarnate.

Her life of prayer and meditation has been exemplary. She feeds the hungry, clothes the naked, heals the sick, all within the regularity of her worship, as a demonstration of her love for God. She transforms a life of tolerating responsibilities into one of appreciating opportunities, from bearing burdens and fulfilling obligations into enjoying the privilege to love: not just the love of our families, not just the love of our friends, nor even just the love for God, but the love of all of Life.  Shree Maa teaches us how to go beyond.

Please, see her interview in "Awareness - the Center of Being".

It is said that selfless service is Divine Wisdom at work. If that is true it is surely reflected in Ma Yoga Shakti's deeds. To her many accomplishments belongs a girls college she has founded and where she served as the principle for many years.

Photo of Anandamayi MaAnandamayi Ma (1896 - 1982) also called Blissful Mother, had reached full Self-realization without the help of any system or Guru and without great effort. She freely went into trances and during a deep state of Samadhi, she realized the whole universe as her Self and then saw how the One appears as the many. Having hardly any education to speak of, she perplexed educated people with her profound answers ever since her realization. When she was thirteen years old she was traditionally married and came to stay with her husband when she was eighteen. However, this was not to be a normal relationship of married couples, instead her husband learned that she was different and, eventually, became her disciple. At times she displayed Hatha Yoga asanas and produced Mantras without ever having learned these systems. Others around her soon fell into Trance and her reputation started to spread and it did not take long before her disciples grew in numbers. It is known that Yogananda had visited her as had Daya Mata and many more. Of course, people would also come to seek healings of all kinds of afflictions. The usual anecdotal reports of other extraordinary events are recorded. At one point, Anandamayi Ma quit feeding herself. It is said that her body refused to hold any food. From that point on, around 1924, her worried devotees undertook the task of feeding her. But even when fed, she ate very little. When asked about the best way to realize God as the Self, she recommended the path of Devotion (Bhakti), also favored by religions including Christians, and the path of Knowledge (Jnana Yoga) favored by Shankara, Ramana Maharshi, and all Vedanta and philosophically minded people. As in the tradition of Vedanta, she insisted that there is only one God and nothing else.
